RIVERVIEW PROGRAM HELPS SMOKERS QUIT FOR GOOD
American Lung Association "Freedom from Smoking"
Smoking is the single most preventable cause of death. One in four smokers dies early because of their smoking. They die of heart disease, cancer and emphysema. In addition, secondhand smoke can harm the health of nonsmokers, causing breathing problems, heart disease and cancer.
If you're ready to kick the tobacco habit for good, register today for Riverview’s American Lung Association “Freedom from Smoking” program. The instructor is JoLynn Winkels, “Freedom from Smoking” facilitator.
“Studies show that about half of the adults who smoke in the United States want to quit,
but it isn’t easy,” said Winkels. “Quitting smoking involves a major change in lifestyle, which affects a person’s self-image and the ways daily stresses are handled. Sometimes you can’t eliminate smoking permanently unless you replace it with other coping strategies.”
“This course offers smokers knowledge, support and coping mechanisms that work,” Winkels said. “Some people also find it easier to quit by being with other people in the same situation.”
The program fee is $60 per person. Individuals who cannot afford the fee may apply for funds through Riverview Medical Center’s financial assistance program. In addition, many health insurance or employee wellness programs provide some reimbursement for smoking cessation courses.
